Our team approached the design of an emergency department through the lens of mental health. While this emergency department during the time of COVID is filling a gap in physical health care, we also sought to address patients' mental health during and after the COVID-19 Pandemic. During COVID-19, many factors have led to the degradation of American's mental health: financial stressors, adapting to new realities like working or learning from home, concerns over individual and familial health, the effects of social isolation, shortages of resources, political turmoil, and perhaps most universal: fear of the unknown. One thing is certain: while we will eventually overcome the physical ramifications of COVID-19, the emotional and psychological ramifications will continue to burden our communities. For this reason, we're designing this emergency department to facilitate the physical needs of the community today while anticipating the growing need for mental health services beyond COVID.
